Violence against journalists

The recent outbreak of violence against Dutch journalists, culminating in the murder of Peter R. de Vries, has raised questions among the public, in political debate, and among academic researchers.

The phenomenon of threats against media professionals is (unfortunately) not new, and the questions raised by this phenomenon have remained the same for years: what are the perpetrators' motives? To what extent is there a clear link to organized crime? What are the experiences and reactions of journalists who are victims and sometimes have to go into hiding for years? Has there been an increase in threats and the use of violence in recent years? To what extent has violence become an occupational hazard for Dutch (crime) journalists?
